UPDATE: 11-23-11
Re~Kr8 is doing BIG things to
change the attitudes of the female
students at a school in New
Orleans. Ayla attends the school
weekly to engage the young ladies
in activities and talk about issues
that affect their daily lives.
The girls are responding so well to
the program, enjoy it, and even
beg for more sessions!
We will have pictures available
SOON!
UPDATE: Our Girl’s Empowerment Workshop went great. The girls were attentive and receptive to all of the information presented to them and they also got to do a fun creative art project to express themselves while I spoke to them about bullying and acceptance.
I was able to get feedback from the young ladies about the topics they would like to be addressed at the next workshop and I am very excited to say that young people REALLY DO CARE. They want to learn and they want to know about their bodies, community, peers, and WORLD. Sometimes they are just too afraid to ask or do not know how to and sometimes they do not realize how much they want to learn about certain topics until the information is brought to their attention.
We look forward to the next workshop and we also have some very exciting new projects coming up soon! Remember to find us on FaceBook&Twitter. #inspireme

Ayla is Against Bullying!

Ayla Expose
- Bullying is a very important issue to me! I experienced it throughout my life and I have seen the effects, firsthand, that it can have on young people. Everyone wants to feels accepted by others and they deserve the right to be so.
Signs that your child may be a bully
· Positive attitude towards violence
· encourage or shows little sympathy toward others who are bullied
· frequently aggressive towards adults – including teachers or parents
· Hot tempered, impulsive, easily frustrated
· Insist on controlling and dominating others and situations
· Test limits or break rules on a regular basis
· Good at talking their way out of difficult situations
Signs your child is being bullied
· Lost interest in school and extracurricular activities
· Frequent complaints of illness to avoid attending school
· torn or damaged clothes
· Belongings that are missing
· Sudden decrease in academic performance
· Suddenly begun to experience unexplained nightmares or trouble sleeping.
· few or no friends with whom he/she spends time with
*** Unexplained bruises, scratches, and cuts ***
· Become afraid of
-going to school, riding the bus, walking to school or taking part in organized activities with peers
· begun to seem more sad, depressed, or moody (especially after coming home from school)
· Loss of appetite
· Anxiety or low self-esteem
If you have noticed any of these signs in your child or teen DO NOT jump to conclusions. Every child goes through these changes at some point. Talk to your child and keep the communication open. Make sure they know that it is okay to talk to your or another adult when they do not feel like themselves or have any questions.
If you have a teen girl (ages 13-19) Please visit our Re~Kr8 page to learn more about the Girl Empowerment Workshop on May 21,2011. I will be giving a seminar on anti-bullying and acceptance.

Playworks’ Philosophy: The Power of Play Playworks’ vision is that one day every child in America will have access to safe, healthy play every day. Play creates essential opportunities for children to explore their imaginations, to connect with other people and to stretch and grow physically, emotionally and socially.

How itWorks: Building Play as a Cornerstone of the School Day
Play provides an unparalleled opportunity to foster the physical, social and emotional development of our kids. Since 1996, Playworks has worked on-site exclusively with low-income schools, engineering a powerful system of play that is making a daily difference where it is most needed. With energy and imagination, high fives and hula hoops, Playworks builds play and physical activity into a positive school environment, offering opportunities throughout the entire day, beginning before the first bell rings and continuing until well after the last has silenced. Our work focuses on five key areas:
Recess Time
Armed with balls, cones, jump ropes and enthusiasm, Playworks coaches take to the blacktop or hardwood every recess, taking advantage of the amazing teaching and learning opportunities inherent in recess and bringing healthy, inclusive play that moves kids off the sidelines and engages them in the action.

Where they are: Playworks has entered into our most ambitious year ever, launching in five new cities across the country for the first time during the 2010-2011 school year. Today, Playworks provides trained, full-time program coordinators, or "coaches," at 250 low-income urban schools in 15 cities in nearly every region of the country.

Our Official LogoIsComplete!

Designed by Ayla Expose created by Evan White
With all of the buzz about the organization we decided we needed a logo that really fit what we are all about; recreation, volunteering and productive lifestyles. Our official logo emulates everything we are! We believe in the power of recreation in the life of a child or teenager. InsPirE mE!™ seeks to inspire young people to get up, get out and get active!
While sitting in the computer lab waiting for my Earth Science class to begin, I happened to be sitting next to someone who would eventually change the face of my organization forever. I had an idea in mind of what I wanted the logo to look like, but as creative as I am, I am NO ARTIST! Somehow we began a conversation about volunteering and I showed Evan White my idea for the logo. I turned away for two minutes and magically my logo was born. Evan White is a tremendously talented artist and, now, a great friend of mine. He believes in the power of inspiration and community service which makes him a great addition to the
InsPirE mE!™ family.
Here is his interview:
Name:Evan James White
Age:19 Talent:Comic Book,Graffiti, Freestyle art.
When did you begin drawing?
Since I [can] remember.
What inspires your art?
Anything really; I can look at a random object and have a four page idea.
What advice do you have for kids who do not believe they can draw but wish they could?
No art is bad art.
Any last words?
I repeat; no art is bad art. If there are those who love your art, you are doing something right. If there are those who hate your art, you are still doing something right. Art is only your perception of thoughts; good or bad. No one else's thoughts matter.
Thank you for everything Evan!!

Sports and kids: Pathway to healthy development or to unhealthy competition?
by Marianne Engle, Ph.D.
An interview with Marianne Engle, Ph.D., sports psychologist and Clinical Assistant Professor at the NYU Child Study Center
To find out more about current trends in sports and kids, AOK interviewed Marianne Engle, Ph. D., a sports psychologist and Clinical Assistant Professor at the NYU Child Study Center.
How significant is sports in the lives of children and adolescents? How many are actually involved in sports? Sports participation is a major factor in the development of most American children.
About 20 million American children ages 6 through 16 play organized out-of-school sports, and about 25 million youth play competitive school sports. 30 to 45 million kids, ages 6 through 18, participate in at least one school or community-based athletic program
What are the top team sports for children ages 6 through 17?
1.) Basketball: Over 4 million players.
2.) Baseball: Over 2 1/2 million players.
3.) Outdoor soccer: Over 2 million players.
4.) Touch football: About 2 million players.
5.) Court volleyball: Almost two million players.
What do children gain from participating in sports?
The gains are numerous. Research has shown that sports contribute to psychological well-being by reducing anxiety and depression and enhancing self-esteem. In sports kids find a social milieu that can promote a spirit of social interaction, cooperation and friendship. Sports help kids think critically and solve problems, build self-discipline, trust, respect for others, leadership and coping skills, all of which form the foundation of character building. Sports have also been shown to improve academic and occupational outcomes, lower school dropout and deter delinquency. And, of course, sports develop the mind/body connection by strengthening the body and training the mind to use it for action and reaction.
Girls have been participating more in sports. Are there specific benefits for girls?
Girls who play sports are more comfortable taking leadership roles in group settings. They learn to set goals and achieve them. Also, according to recent research, female athletes have been shown to have their first intercourse later in adolescence and are less likely to get pregnant than female non-athletes.
Should kids start sports at an early age?
Children younger than 5 years of age should be involved in exploration and simple motor activities. For young children, just keep them moving and having fun, and don't focus too much on organized games. For school age children, focus on developing skills, teamwork and trying out different sports. Avoid early specialization and too much game time.
What factors affect a child's success in athletics?
Self-selection is important. When children choose on their own to participate in a sport their motivation to succeed is strengthened. Warm, positive, effective coaching and parenting contribute in a big way to kids' motivation and success.
What if a kid doesn't want to join a team?
Children can be encouraged to play more individually based sports such as tennis, swimming, bowling, gymnastics, self-defense sports, and many other activities. Respect and support children's interests in other areas, such as music and other arts, but encourage them to be physically active.
Are there pitfalls that parents should try to avoid?
Parents can become overly involved in their children's sports and have unrealistic expectations for success. Some parents, unwittingly or intentionally, transmit the message that winning is all-important. In reality, it's the skills and teamwork that are the most important for children. Parents can help balance their children's lives so that they don't become overly involved and neglect other areas of their lives.
What are some trends in children's sports participation that are of concern?
In schools, there's been a drop in the number of students enrolled in daily physical education classes, so that one in four children do not attend any school physical education class.
~70% of children drop out of organized sports by the age of 13.
~Nearly 1/2 of people ages 12-21 & more than 1/3 of high school students do not ~participate in any vigorous physical activity on a regular basis.
~Fewer than 1 out of 4 children get 20 minutes of vigorous daily exercise.
~The % of overweight young Americans has more than doubled in the past 30 years.
What are the costs of physical inactivity?
Physical inactivity exacts a huge toll.
It was estimated to cause 1.9 million deaths worldwide in 2000
10 to 16 percent of cases each of breast cancer, colon cancer and diabetes.
In the United States, inactivity contributed to an estimated $75 billion in medical costs in 2000 alone.
