Can you dance, sing, act, sew or would like to learn how to do these things?  Recreation can be very costly and it is extremely difficult to find places that offer these services for free.  In most cases, in order for an organization to offer such services at no cost, it require a lot of volunteers!!
The problem with volunteers, although they are truly a gift to any organization, you face the risk of them not being dedicated or reliable since their is no $$$ involved!
I volunteer for:
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Make A Wish
  • ARNO (a no-kill animal shelter)
  • Ochsner Hospital
     HIgh Voltage,Inc
Volunteering is very rewarding in it's own special way.  Everyone gets something different out of it.  What I love most about the work I do is that I am truly helping people.  When I help build homes I am providing a place for someone to sleep at night.  It gives them a sense of security and something to call their own.  When I grant a Wish, I give a child hope and memories. I provide them with a once in a lifetime opportunity that they get to share with their families  It takes their mind off of their sickness and reminds them that they are still a kid and deserve to have fun! When I am walking dogs, I give them happiness.  Animals are easy to please and the simplest things in life make them happy.  I love that I am able to give them lots of love and attention that they would not otherwise get if they were living on the streets.  Lastly, when I am at the hospital I am right at home.  I love spending time with the children and taking their minds off their illness.  All of the children have their own unique personalities and different joys.  I feel so great when I see a child one week, come back the next and I can talk with them about all of they love to do that I remembered from the week before.  This lets them know that their is someone else out their who truly cares about their wants and concerns.  I love putting smiles on their faces when I hand them movies, games, toys, and art supplies.
